Junior Primary (Prep to Grade 2)

Using simple shapes and block colours, junior primary students will learn to:

  • identify and draw regular shapes
  • turn regular shapes into creatures using simple face construction techniques
  • create creatures out of irregular shapes
  • construct boy and girl creatures of their own design
Requirements

This is a a fun and interactive session that can be run for any class size. Students will require five pieces of A4 paper, a sharp HB pencil, an eraser, some coloured pencils and something to lean on to complete their creations.

Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours

Middle Primary (Grades 3 and 4)

Using simple face construction techniques, middle  primary students will learn t0:

  • use regular shapes to form the basis of a cartoon face
  • appreciate proportion and sizing in face construction
  • distinguish between boy and girl faces
  • apply the same techniques to constructing animal faces
Requirements

This is a a fun and interactive session that can be run for any class size. Students will require five pieces of A4 paper, a sharp HB pencil, an erasure, some coloured pencils and something to lean on to complete their creations.

Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours

Senior Primary (Grades 5 and 6)

Using simple body construction techniques, senior primary students will learn to:

  • use regular shapes to form the basis of a cartoon face and body
  • appreciate proportion and sizing in body construction
  • identify the differences between boy and girl bodies
  • use these techniques to develop their own cartoon characters
Requirements

This is a a fun and interactive session that can be run for any class size. Students will require five pieces of A4 paper, a sharp HB pencil, an erasure, some coloured pencils and something to lean on to complete their creations.

Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours

Junior Secondary (Years 7 and 8)

Combining all of the techniques above, junior secondary students will learn to:

  • develop unique cartoon characters
  • portray movement and action in cartoon characters
  • create background scenes
  • develop a simple cartoon/comic strip
Requirements

This is a a fun and interactive session that can be run for any class size. Students will require a supply of A4 paper, HB pencils, erasures, rulers and black permanent markers (eg Sharpie markers) to complete their art work.

Cartooning with a Tablet

Appropriate for any year level that have a tablet program as part of their curriculum.

Sessions are designed to introduce the basics of cartoon design using graphics software and will cover:

  • the cartoon elements listed in the programs above, plus…
  • using layers
  • adding colour
  • adding shadows and highlights
  • the differences between publishing for print media and the internet
Requirements

This is a a fun and interactive session that can be run for any class size. Students will require a tablet (iOS or Android) loaded with the free Sketchbook Express app.

Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Matt’s rates are $150/per hour (+GST) with a minimum booking of three hours. A travel charge may be incurred if more than 100km is covered in a single day for your incursion. The travel fee will be waived for rural schools if an incursion is booked during a “Cartoon Tour”.
